E. M. Tod's Tummel Style No.1

You don't see many people tying and fishing Tummel style wets nowadays, but you should! This pattern from the 1800s is still an absolute wonder for trout and grayling. Glyn's Mini-Fry

This simple little fly from Glyn Hopper is a good choice for trout feeding on small fry. Although it works all year, it generally comes into its own a few weeks after the tiny pin-fry start showing up, but before they get up to finger size near the end of the season. It's well worth its place in the loch style fisher's box whether for fishing wild hill lochs, lowland lakes or reservoirs. It has even reportedly taken seatrout in the salt. Peter Ross

The Peter Ross is a great fly for lochs and rivers. Tied in various sizes it can be a deadly midge imitation, a small baitfish imitation or an attractor for salmon and seatrout. Materials list Hook: Kamasan B175 size 6-14 Thread: Black Uni 8/0 Tail: Golden pheasant tippet Rib: Silver wire Body: Silver tinsel & red seal fur Wing: Teal Hackle: Black hen To support the channel, join the online tying classes and enter the giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers and sign up or donate at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/flickingfeathers

Teal, Blue & Silver

The teal blue and silver is an absolute classic wet fly. Although it's probably most popular as a seatrout fly, it is a good choice for brown and rainbow trout as well as salmon. Fish it big in the salt or in rivers for salmon and seatrout, or slightly smaller for loch style brown trout fishing. Material list Hook: Kamasan B175 size 6-12 Thread: Black Uni 8/0 Tail: Golden pheasant tippet Rib: Silver wire Body: Flat silver tinsel Wing: Teal flank Hackle: Kingfisher blue or teal blue hen To support the channel, join the monthly online tying classes and enter the giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers or https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/flickingfeathers and sign up

Soon

Another old one I wrote for www.sexyloops.com We're well into May now, spring is fully here and the mayfly will be here soon too. Whether on rivers or still waters, it's one of the main events of the season and it's the time of year I really miss being on the lochs back home. Although Ireland's loughs are probably the place that springs to mind for most people when it comes to mayfly fishing in still waters, there are some lochs in Scotland with good hatches that offer some fantastic fishing especially-but not limited to- Caithness. Oddly though, mayfly time seems to be less of and event than it is in Ireland, maybe because it comes a bit later in the highlands. Admittedly the hatches usually are not quite so prolific as on the likes of Mask and Corrib but they last longer, sometimes even until early August! I've had some amazing days on Mentieth, Hillend and others with both numbers and quality of fish, often wild, sometimes well mended overwintered rainbows depen

Dark Olive

This Dark Olive is a version of the Cathal Rush Pattern listed in Peter O'Reilly's Flies of Ireland. It's a good early season fly, especially when the large olives are hatching. The Red game hackle blends fantastically with the dark olive dubbing to give a great illusion of life. Just enough light transmission for a 'glow' around the edge of the strong silhouette when viewed from below. Fish it on the top dropper. Yellow Gosling

The Goslings are fantastic wet mayflies, they've been around for a while and have spawned loads of variants. This yellow version is one of the earlier patterns that continues to be used to great effect to this day. Cock Robin

The Cock Robin is an old wetfly that fishes well on the point or middle dropper. It can be particularly effective early in the season when olives are hatching or, when tied larger, at mayfly time. Lime Tailed Loch Ordie

There are any number of Loch Ordie variants and this lime tailed version is a firm favourite of mine. Popular in the highlands and islands of Scotland for wild browns and also effective all over the British Isles and further afield. If you fish still water for browns you really should put some of these in your box. Paisley Snatcher

This snatcher version of the Paisley wet fly is a great option for midge feeders in calmer conditions when there isn't enough wave to fish a bigger bushy fly and when there are cow dung fly about. It's as effective for wild brown trout on the lochs as for stocked fish.To support my channel, join the monthly online tying sessions and enter the giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers and become a patron or support through paypal.me/flickingfeathers Materials list Hook: Kamasan B100 size 12-14 Thread:Black Uni 8/0 Tag: Globrite no.4 floss Rib: Gold wire Body: Golden olive seal fur Body hackle: Badger cock, stripped on one side Collar hackle: Red cock hackle Head: Golden olive seal fur

The Irishman's Claret

More compact than a dabbler but offering a heavier form than a bumble, the Irishman's Claret is a nice wet fly pattern for the top dropper that fishes best in a decent wave. Pudding House Fly

This traditional Welsh wet fly works well in a sedge hatch or as a more general prospecting fly. It's not particularly flashy or bright, but it certainly looks like food. The original pattern calls for bright red silk as the rib, but I like the effect of the Globrite. In George Barron's book, he lists a pattern with a red holographic rib which is a nice variation too. Materials List Hook: Kamasan B175 or B170 size 10&12 Thread: Uni 8/0 red Rib: Globrite no.4 Body: Hare's fur dubbing Hackle: Brown partridge Wing: Slips from hen pheasant primary   To support my channel , get access to the monthly tying sessions and enter the giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers and become a patron or support through paypal.me/flickingfeathers

Hypocritical

The Hypocrite, or Hypocrite's Flee is a pattern I tied many years ago and has a bit of a funny story behind the name. It's shown itself to be a great taker of both wild and stocked fish from the Orkneys and Shetlands to the reservoirs of southern England.
